Double Page Spread--

Double Page Spread--
This is my final double page spread, when creating it, I went through various trial and error combinations but I felt that this combination was the best because it looks like the most professional standard. Using research previously posted on my blog of professional double page spreads already on the market, I was able to make some small and large changes to increase the quality.

Location

I went into the center of Bristol to take my photo-shoot for my double page spread, where I knew many of graffiti pictures were. I took a range of pictures so I would have plenty to choose from and to see which suited best. I chose this image on the right because it was the most appealing to myself and I felt that it can link to my double page writing as the graffiti is also set in Bristol. I searched on the internet to find out the best possible places in Bristol for graffiti images, I found a place where a graffiti project had taken place. When I originally planned my double page spread I wanted to try and use some Banksy (a well known graffiti artist located in Bristol) material but felt that the other images were much better to use instead. I also planned my photo-shoot in Bristol to be taken on a day with sunny weather, in hope that the images would be of a better quality to use in my double page spread.

Photos and Decisions

As I took many different images on  my photo-shoot, I had a large variety to choose from, meaning I could try different layouts and use the one I felt was best. I had to take into consideration the size and shape of the photos I was taking. Although I had originally planned to use the Banksy graffiti image on the left of the screen, it was have been hard because the image was not the correct rectangular shape, ideal for a double page spread background. I had this problem with a number of images taken, if it was possible to use other photos with a more rectangular shape, I would also need to think about the positioning of the text, whether there was a suitable area to place the text. When choosing from my variety of photos, as well as size and shape, I had to consider the colour schemes, text positioning and whether or not it can relate to my magazine audience i.e the same genre and if there was an area for my character to be placed.

I was considering using this "Welcome To Bristol" image at the top on my double page spread because it could link with my text as it is also set in Bristol. When taking a photo of this graffiti piece, I had to return to the area at various times in the day because the images were too bright. I tried it on my double page spread by cropping and fading around the edges on Photoshop. However I didn't choose this image because the colours didn't match and blend in with the background so i decided to use a better image. Instead I used the below image, "Truth and Beauty", because the colours suited with the background. On Photoshop I used the same techniques and tools previously used on the "Welcome To Bristol" image, which I felt looked much better. I also used the replace colour tool to enhance the blues and browns in the picture. The text of the image was in a brown colour, using various tools on Photoshop I was able to make it darker and more of a black colour, making it easier for the audience to read.

My Character
I took a variety of images of my character, "Billy", to use for my double page spread. My story and all writing on the double page is related to Billy and his career. When taking the photos I made sure it was on a neutral background, so that it would be easier to take out when needed. I also made sure all photos were taken on a sunny day in order for the images to come out in the best quality as possible and so that a shadow was cast, to give it a better effect. On Photoshop I used many different tools such as the Magic Selection Tool to select the character alone, rather than the whole background too. I then used filter effects on my character to give him a slightly cartoon look. My graffiti background image was on a wall which has a extended part attached, it also casts a shadow, I took this into consideration when taking my pictures. With most of my images of my character, I had Billy lean against the wall so that when I cropped the background out and added the character to the double page background, it looks like Billy was leaning on the extended part of the wall.

Writing

When writing my stories for my double page spread, I created an musician and talked about his struggle throughout his life and his fashion spreading across the country. To ensure there were no spelling, grammar and punctuation errors, I wrote everything in Word. For my subheadings, I used a online font generator, I used same font as I did for the rest of my magazine, so that I could keep a continuous house style. When researching double page spreads for my magazine, I emulated some positioning and colour combinations of the text. Whenever I had my character speaking I used tools on Word to make it stand out from the rest of the text.

Organisation

I created this layout on word before making my double page spread as I did with my contents and front cover. By using this I was able to follow the template and make it look as I intended. During the making of my double page spread I was able to make small changes to the template as and when I changed my mind.
